Bitter-sweet launch for pubs’ tug-of-war

Two village pubs are taking their battle for customers onto...the battlefield.

The ancient inns of Woolstone – the 16th century Cross Keys and young upstart, the 19th century Barge Inn – are to fight it out in a tug of war.

Battle commences on the village green next to The Cross Keys in Newport Road at 10.30am on Sunday to give the Keys’ weekend Augustfest beer festival a bitter-sweet launch.

The Keys’ landlady, Charmaine Vaz, said: “I challenged Bryan (Major), manager of The Barge, to a fight – and he’s obliged. “I’ve heard that he’s put his regulars through a strict training regime, but I reckon my boys hold the Keys to victory.”

Everyone is welcome to drop in on the action – after which the winners will be celebrating in time-honoured fashion – with plenty of pints.
