Bletchley Park announced winter lecture series

BLETCHLEY Park Trust will again be running a its acclaimed winter lecture series, offering a range of fascinating talks about World War Two and the park.

The lectures, ranging from the founding of M16 to the Battle of the Atlantic, will be held in the atmospheric surroundings of the Bletchley Park Mansion.

Bletchley Park will also once again be joining with the Projected Picture Trust for the Annual Film Show in its 1940’s style cinema.

The following events will take place:

October 13: Before Pyry: An account of some of the early work carried out on Enigma by GC & CS before the outbreak of war – Frank Carter

November 10: The Battle of Britain: RAF and Luftwaffe Intelligence compared. Sebastian Cox returns to discuss this topic

December 8: The park isa planning another visit to The Projected Picture Trust’s Cinema for our annual Film Show. This event is limited to 50 tickets and is not included in the season ticket price. Tickets are £10 and must be booked and paid for before the night. Friends of Bletchley Park discounts apply

January 12, 2012: KMS Scharnhorst: The battleship that never was – Bob Horner. When war broke out in September 1939, the Kriegsmarine’s largest and newest ship in service was Scharnhorst. Bob tells the story of this ship from inception to her eventual destruction on Boxing Day 1943

February 9, 2012: The First C: Manfield Cumming and the Founding of M16 – Alan Judd. The author of “The Quest for ‘C’” discusses this fascinating character and his exploits

March 8, 2012: Intelligence in the Far East Campaigns – Peter Wescombe

April 12, 2012: The Safe and Timely Arrival of Convoy SC 130 15th, 24th May 1943 – Dr Dennis Haslop. The convoy signalled the turning point in the battle of the Atlantic when organisation and technological developments confronted the U-boats with a naval rout that caused unsustainable losses in personnel

Lectures will commence at 7.30pm and the Mansion is open from 6.30pm.

Tickets, which include a glass of wine, orange juice or coffee after the lecture, cost £10 for a single lecture or £50 for a season ticket to all six lectures.
