A MAN had to be cut free from his car after crashing into an undertakers in Newport Pagnell this afternoon (Monday).

The driver lost control of his silver BMW 318, and wound up crashing into the H.W. Mason & Sons funeral directors on Newport Pagnell High Street. The car also hit a parked black BMW and bent over a lamppost on it’s way through.

Firemen had to cut the roof off the vheicle to free the driver. The remains of the car and the second vehicle that it hit were later taken away by a police tow truck.

The shop’s proprietor Roy Mason said: “A gentleman lost control of his car, hit a parked car which was knocked into another one, bent a lamppost and hit the front of my shop.

“I think the screams from the shop could be heard halfway down the High Street. You can imagine the scene with three ladies sat in the shop going about their business and then suddenly a car bursts through.”

Mr Mason also spoke of the response to the crash by the emergency services.

“The man was unconscious and had to be cut free and stretchered out. He was starting to regain consciousness when he was being taken to the ambulance,” he added.

“When anything big like this happens in Newport I think all the services are called out. There were four fire engines and many police cars. We can all send our compliments to the firemen for the way they acted to free the man.”

Residents said they heard a massive bang when the incident took place. One said the driver was in a daze after the incident.

Mr Mason also spoke about the restoration process that will take place for the front of his shop.

He said: “The shop front is a listed genuine Georgian building and it will cost a lot to replace. The wood will be taken to the joiners and we will replace the shop front post-haste.”
