Bond is making it big after Luther star Idris’ choice

A 22-year-old film maker who won over star of hit TV show Luther after being chosen as his protégé is now becoming a hit on the small screen.

Milton Keynes’ Andrew Bond won the film category in Samsung’s Launching People project, which is a search for undiscovered British and Irish talent with a passion for food, film, music and photography.

He now has Idris Elba as a mentor in a new television series, The Ones To Watch, which is airing on Sky 1 at 7pm every Sunday untilJune 8.

In February this year, Samsung joined forces with pop-up chef and Sunday Times cook Gizzi Erskine, award-winning actor and filmmaker Idris Elba, singer-songwriter Paloma Faith and portrait and fashion photographer Rankin, to find people with extraordinary potential and original ideas.

Andrew said: “It was my girlfriend’s brother who encouraged me to enter.

“I couldn’t quite believe that I had won when they told me but working with Idris has been a truly great experience.

“He is very supportive of my ideas and his experience is invaluable.”

Andrew’s submission Howard’s Happy Place showcased his ability to create a heart-warming and immensely enjoyable film, and won over mentor Idris Elba.

After finding out he had won the Film category, Andrew spent two weeks working with Idris one-on-one on a unique project, which has been captured in The Ones To Watch.

Idris said: “When I first started this project I said I wanted to find someone who wanted to tell a story and inspire others.

“They might have an idea that they’re not quite sure how to take to the next level.

“If I represent anything, it’s someone who dreamed big and achieved those dreams.

“In Andrew, I feel I have found someone who has a similar aspiration and that is why I picked him.”
