A Milton Keynes-based furniture retailer has ceased trading putting 300 jobs at risk.

Dwell has its registered office in Harding Road, Brinklow, and outlets in Patriot Drive, Rooksley and thecentre:mk.

As well as its 23 stores and one concession in House of Fraser, it also has its own central warehouse and distribution centre in Milton Keynes.

A spokesman for the company said staff had been sent home as the firm seeks to go into administration.

A spokesmand for Dwell Retail said the company was not able to obtain working capital to continue and bosses were left with “no option” but to close it down with “immediate effect”.

A spokesman from Dwell Retail Limited, said: “The business had been working with its advisers, to secure further working capital for the business and was actively in the process of talking to a number of interested parties who saw the value of the Dwell brand and product, its customer base and its multi channel proposition.

“However, despite this interest it did not progress. As a result we have been left with no option but to close the business with immediate effect.”

Dwell began trading with a single store in Balham, South London in 2003.

From there it grew with locations in London such as Islington, Tottenham Court Road and both Westfield shopping complexes. In recent years it expanded from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

As well as closing all stores the company also shut down its website to orders and stopped deliveries.

Customers who bought goods and have outstanding orders have been advised to contact their card issuers “in the first instance.”
