Internet retailer Amazon is taking on more than 1,000 seasonal workers in Milton Keynes to cope with the expected Christmas surge.
Part timer so-called associates are being be recruited at the huge Marston Gate fulfilment centre on temporary contracts as part of Amazon’s drive to hire more than 10,000 temporary employees in its UK during the busy Christmas period.
Catherine McDermott, director of operations at Amazon.co.uk, said: “On our busiest shopping day last Christmas, we saw customers order a total of three million items during one 24-hour period at a rate of 35 items every second.
“We look forward to welcoming a good number of new faces to the centres over the coming weeks as well as welcoming back temporary employees who join us every year over the Christmas period.”
In the last three years, thousands of UK employees initially on temporary contracts have moved into permanent roles.
Amazon recently announced the opening of its eighth UK fulfilment centre, in Hemel Hempstead.
