A SHOPPING centre has proved it is pure gold when it comes to keeping at the forefront of the retail industry.

thecentre:mk has seen significant enhancements over the last year which have brought in new outlets, new technology and improvements in its green credentials.

At the leading retail industry annual awards ceremony on December 1, thecentre:mk was awarded a BCSC Gold for Best Established Centre, beating stiff competition from other regional shopping centres.

The Gold Awards are leading accolades within the shopping centre and retail destination industry, designed to reward excellence in retail-led development and recognise projects that drive regeneration and generate improvement in the quality of the built environment.

Robert Hall, centre director at the centre said: “The world of retail property is evolving quickly and in order to maintain thecentre:mk’s competitive edge, we will continue to examine ways of keeping the centre fresh and relevant, investing in enhancement and essential improvement initiatives, whilst working with the statutory bodies to ensure that required future enhancements are effectively and smoothly managed, given the new listed status.”

Over the course of the last 12 months, thecentre:mk has delivered a significant enhancement programme, which has built on the Premium Quarter retail line up with the introduction of Thomas Sabo, L’Occitane and Pandora, while the launch of the multi-million pound Destination Dining development has introduced fantastic new restaurants and created a stronger evening economy proposition for the city centre.

Key to the success of the tenant mix and investment initiatives is the comprehensive marketing strategy, which integrates print, broadcast and online media to extend the consumer profile and build on the centre’s existing catchment base. Thecentre:mk has worked alongside local digital agency Interdirect which has developed and provided the wayfinding touchscreen technology and software, which integrates retailers, consumers and centre management through interactive mall pods, alongside a pioneering iPhone application.

On the environmental front, the award submission demonstrates thecentre:mk’s continued commitment to reducing its carbon emissions and water use, recycling some 58 per cent of the centre’s common waste and making major improvements in health and safety measures.
