A HUGE celebration of sport is being planned in Milton Keynes to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic Torch in the new city.

Former Olympic swimming medallist Sharron Davies and hilarious former England hockey international Roger Dakin are the main speakers at the Torchlight Dinner at stadium:mk on Monday, July 9.

Organiser Sally Fennemore said: “We are looking to make this something really special with former Olympians and internationals, young talent, sports demonstrations, attendance of Torch bearers and possibly even a torch!”

The event is being put together by Milton Keynes Sporting Lunch Club, which raises money for Sports Aid. The charity helps young Olympians with some of their training and living costs. Presentations will be made to young hopefuls on the night, which starts at 7pm.

Special bursary awards will also be made by MK Community Foundation and there will be an auction, a silent auction and a raffle to raise more funds.

Mrs Fennemore added: “We are also seeking sponsors for a drinks reception for the VIPs, which will not only include the sports celebrities but also the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff and the mayor.”

The MK Sporting Lunch Club’s events are always well attended and Mrs Fennemore expects there will be a lot of interest in this particular event.

Tables of 10 and 12 are being sold and individuals can also buy tickets at £50 per person and Mrs Fennemore would like to have an early registration of interest. Attendees should email or telephone her on 01908 586326.
