Call for Milton Keynes to join the People's Vote for Brexit

City Liberal Democrats are hoping both Labour and Tories will vote with them – but admit the margins could be “knife edge”.

The Lib Dems are calling for the people to have the say on any final Brexit deal or no deal.

They are urging the council’s chief executive to write to MPs and Secretaries of State asking them to support the People’s Vote too.

And they are also asking for all non-UK EU citizens already in Milton Keynes to be given immediate right to remain, in line with current EU rules.

Councillor Ric Brackenbury said: “Many of the services provided by MK council, including social care, are reliant on staff from elsewhere in the EU. If our council cannot recruit enough staff then services to many of the most vulnerable in Milton Keynes will be threatened.”

He added: “The NHS, which was already suffering a staffing shortage, is finding it harder to employ staff from elsewhere in the EU and many staff are leaving. This has a much more serious impact in MK with a high proportion of staff from elsewhere in the EU and a growing population.”

Cllr Brackenbury said people were now aware of “new issues” that were not discussed during the referendum.
