The group has backed up its demand by publishing a 'town hall rich list' that details the salaries of the council's chief executive and top officers.

John O'Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “The coronavirus crisis means that frontline council services are more crucial than ever, but at the same time household budgets face an enormous squeeze from crushing council tax rises."

He added: “There are plenty of talented people in local authorities who are focused on delivering more for less, but that is needed across the board. The country needs every council to cut out waste and prioritise key services without resorting to punishing tax hikes on their residents.

“These figures should shine a light on the town hall bosses who’ve got it right, but also allow taxpayers to hold to account those who aren’t delivering value for money at this critical time.”

Taxpayers' Alliance is also asking that all councils focus their spending on frontline health and social care services during the pandemic.

The rich list shows MK Council chief executive Michael Bracey on a salary of £112,079, slightly less than the £113,475 earned by his Corporate Director of Resources.

Six other officers earn over £100,000.

Council tax bills were recently sent out out to homes all over Milton Keynes. As a concession during the coronavirus crisis, the council will be reducing bills by £150 for residents who are already in receipt of reductions or concessions.

An MKC spokesman said: "We will be reducing council tax by £150 for those residents who already receive Council Tax Reduction ... Milton Keynes Council relies on council tax to fund many important local services. However, if you are worried about making payments then please contact us so we can discuss arrangements to support you through this difficult period.”
