Church friends host two talks on medieval times

The Friends of St Lawrence are hosting the event on Saturday, May 6, from 2.30pm to 5pm, and tickets are limited.

Two connected talks will relate to Broughton - one about Dunstable’s Augustinian Priory which oversaw Broughton parish and the other about John Benet who was Rector of Broughton from 1471 to 1474.

Local historian Jean Yates will be talking about Dunstable’s Augustinian Priory, built by Henry I opposite his palace of Kingsbury.

The Priory held land and manors across seven counties and the profits from their diverse business interests, from rents to lead mining, were used to support the monastery’s work.

The second talk will be about John Benet, who saved a unique record of British and European History for posterity. Previous to Broughton, he was vicar of Harlington and over a period of some ten years he created a unique English chronicle.

This event is also a chance for visitors to view St Lawrence’s stunning medieval wall paintings.
