ONE of the driving forces behind the development of Milton Keynes is to be honoured by having the City Gardens named after him.

A ceremony on Friday will see the gardens, situated behind Christ the Cornerstone Church, re-named Fred Roche Gardens.

Mr Roche was the general manager for Milton Keynes Development Corporation in the 1970s. He was responsible for overseeing a huge housing programme and developing much of CMK.

The private ceremony comes 20 years to the day after his death and will be performed by Mayor Catriona Morris. A plaque will be unveiled by Mr Roche’s widow, Val.

The re-naming of the gardens has been campaigned for by the Fred Roche Foundation, which is battling to see Mr Roche gain greater recognition in the city he helped build.
