SIX years after it closed and boarded up for good, it’s announced a new tenant will be moving into the Co-op building in Bletchley.

The huge building in Queensway has been empty since 2006 when the Co-operative moved out, and, until recently, no plans had been made to open its doors again.

However, the chain, which still pays the rent on the building, confirmed that a deal with a new tenant was nearing completion.

A spokesman for The Co-operative said: “The Co-operative has been actively marketing the property and can confirm that an offer has been made.

“It hopes that the deal will be completed with the site’s potential new occupier before the year-end however, until all of the necessary legal documentation has been completed, it is unable to add anything further.”

Lisa Courtney, town clerk for Bletchley and Fenny Stratford Town Council, said members were not privvy to the Co-op’s plans, but were delighted to hear that something if finally being done.

“All we know so far is that the Co-op is going through the motions of allowing new tenants to move in,” she said.

“Of course this is great news for Bletchley. It has been empty for so many years and we’ve had no idea when, or if, it would ever re-open.”

Bletchley has suffered more than most areas with the closure of many of its popular high street chains, replaced with charity or bargain stores.

And after a multi-million pound refurbishment of Stephenson House, more than half of the new stores have been vacated.

But Lisa believes the re-opening of a store in the Co-op building could give a shot in the arm to the rest of Bletchley.

She said: “It should have a postive reaction for the rest of Bletchley too.

“We are keen to rejuvinate Bletchley’s town centre and we hope it can spread to the rest of the area, including Stephenson House.”
