Council cancel spending day with rough sleepers

The 33-year-old was found dead in the doorway of Christ the Cornerstone Church on Monday.

Yesterday, representatives from MK Council and partners were due to meet with rough sleepers across the city.

This has been postponed indefinitely.

A council spokesman said: “Our first thoughts go to Tony Porter’s family and friends following his tragic death in such sad circumstances.

“Milton Keynes Council had worked to support Mr Porter over a number of years, alongside other partner organisations, including talking with him to explore housing opportunities and other programmes on several occasions.

“In many cases, providing housing is not the only answer. The particular needs and circumstances of every individual person are different and might include a number of issues.

“This could involve family breakdown, job loss and mental health, alongside other social issues such as alcohol, drugs and NPS (commonly referred to in the media as legal highs).

“Out of respect for Mr Porter, his family and friends, the council and partners have postponed a previously-planned day of engagement with rough sleepers in Milton Keynes.”
