Councillors call for urgent review after Bletchley fire

Following Friday's fire in a house on the Lakes estate in Bletchley, Labour's local team of councillors Martin Gowans, Mohammed Khan and Alan Webb have called for an urgent review of all properties on the estate with the Fire Service to ensure properties are safe.

They also want to ensure that every property has smoke alarms.

Friday’s fire started on the second floor of the two storey house and the residents escaped safely, but a mother and two children were taken to hospital.

“We are very concerned about any fire and I am conscious we have a mix of ownership and renting across the estate,” said Cllr Martin Gowans, who lives next to the estate.

“We have private rented housing alongside council housing and owner occupier homes. All were built in the 1970s and we must ensure they are safe. That is why we want to review safety across the community.”

Cllr Mohamed Khan, who was brought up on the estate added, “I visited the property after the fire. I am concerned that every house should have smoke detectors. We will talk to council officers about this.”

Cllr Alan Webb, who lived on the Lakes for many years added: “There is a great sense of community on the Lakes. We need to ensure all properties are safe from fire. I support asking the Fire service and Council to undertake a review of fire safety across all the estate regardless of tenure.”
