Councillor to appear in court on charge of neglecting a small child in Milton Keynes

Police have today confirmed Cllr Shammi Akter has been summoned to appear before MK magistrates on November 3.

She faces one charge of neglecting/assaulting/ill-treating/abandoning a child to cause unnecessary suffering or injury, say police.

Cllr Akter, a single parent, is the Labour representative for Woughton and Fishermead ward.

She has been suspended from the Labour party but will remain a member of the Labour group on MK Council pending the outcome of the court proceedings.

Ms Akter is a member of Woughton Community Council as well as president and founder of the Milton Keynes All Women's Welfare Association.
