The 27-year-old driver turned his vehicle towards a dual carriageway and sped away, with the police car in pursuit.

They reached 114mph, Aylesbury Crown Court heard.

Morrison then began driving at more than 88mph along a 30mph residential road in Newport Pagnell, causing oncoming traffic to swerve out of the way as he veered into the wrong lane.

Judge Catherine Tulk said: "At about quarter to three in the afternoon on a weekday in October, driving through largely residential areas at speeds which on occasion exceeded 88mph in a 30mph limit, you are extremely lucky that you are not sitting there facing something more serious."

She added: "At that sort of speed, all it would have needed was a child stepping off the pavement and they would have been dead, there is no two ways around that."

Prosecutors said Morrison had two previous convictions but had not committed any other driving offences.

Judge Tulk handed the driver a 10-month jail sentence but said she would suspend it for 18 months after hearing that Morrison's girlfriend was pregnant.

She said: "I take the view that locking you up for a period would be far more of a punishment for her than it would be for you."

Morrison was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and five rehabilitation activity requirement days. He had admitted dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and without third party insurance.
