Films inspired by young man who died of stab wounds on city estate to be premiered in Milton Keynes this month

Four films produced by young people from Milton Keynes will be premiered this month in memory of Lewis Wenman.

Lewis was just 17 when he died of stab wounds in Tyburn Avenue on Springfield last November.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with his murder. He is too young to be legally named.

The Junior Filmmakers project was launched afterwards and named The Lewis Initiative, with an aim of discouraging young people from getting into knife crime. Its theme is ‘Knives Ruin Lives’ and the films will be shown to school pupils all over the borough.

Lewis's death drove home the "urgent need" to create communication and engagement programmes with young people to reduce the use of knives and save lives, say project organisers

The premiere was originally scheduled to take place in June but had to be postponed when restrictions were not lifted. It will now take place on July 31.

Speaking at the premier will be national advocate against knife crime Darren Gee ,who spent time in prison for being part of a gang murder as a young person. He will be talking about his experiences and advocacy.

Superintendent Marc Tarbit, MK Area Commander for Thames Valley Police will also be speaking about what police are doing to combat knife crime.

Following the premiere, the films will be toured to all schools in Milton Keynes accompanied by a police officer to give an opportunity to young people to ask questions and understand the issues better.

Funding for the project was provided by L&Q Homes who are property developers in Milton Keynes.
