They then posted the photo on social media with the caption: " Team 5 officers bumped into the heavyweight champion of the world Anthony Joshua today whilst on patrol in Milton Keynes."

This prompted some people to complain that the officers should be doing their job and not posing for selfies.

But a police spokesman said: "Many of you have expressed concern about the number of officers in this photo. Officers responded to reports of an altercation in Dansteed Way involving a large group of people. This was safely resolved. It was following their attendance to this incident that the photo was taken."

A Daytona spokesman said the incident involved minor damage to a vehicle in the venue car park.

He said: " The police were called and arrived to resolve the matter. This situation occurred before Anthony Joshua and his party visited our venue for a private party. After the police had resolved the incident and as they were leaving Mr Joshua arrived.

"The police officers asked Mr Joshua for a “selfie” which he kindly agreed to. Neither Mr Joshua or his party were involved in the incident at our venue and their presence was entirely coincidental."

He added: "Mr Joshua completed the Daytona Fast Lap Challenge at Daytona Milton Keynes which involved him setting a fast-timed lap of the circuit."

Previous famous faces spotted taking part in Daytona's Fast Lap Challenge include former England cricket captain Sir Alastair Cook, 2019 BTCC Champion Colin Turkington, Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Max Verstappen, Alex Albon and previous World Champion Fernando Alonso, Formula 1 commentator David Croft and ex-England football internationals Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott.
