Man pays out thousands after being found guilty of abandoning car in Milton Keynes

Steven Rawson was found guilty in his absence at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court on November 13 of abandoning a vehicle in a Greenleys car park earlier this year.

The court heard that on March 2, council officers were called to Drovers Croft, Greenleys, to investigate an abandoned Saab motor vehicle. They found that the car had been left in a council-owned car park and its MOT had expired in 2016.

A notice was placed on the vehicle asking the owner to move it and contact the council, but a week later the car was still there, and it was removed into storage.

Subsequent communications inviting Rawson to collect his vehicle were ignored and the vehicle was destroyed.

Rawson was fined £440 for abandoning his car and ordered to pay £805 compensation to the council for the removal, storage and subsequent destruction of the car. He was also ordered to pay the council’s legal costs of £737.71 and a £44 victim surcharge.

Pete Roberts, from Milton Keynes Council's environmental crime unit, said: “We’re aware of vehicle related problems in this area and we hope that this sentence sends a clear message to those thinking of just dumping their unwanted cars.”
