Mayor’s car stolen from driveway minutes before historic Rugby World Cup announcement

The Mayor’s official car was stolen yesterday morning as the chauffeur got out to help the Mayor put on her mayoral chain.

Councillor Catriona Morris was minutes away from leaving her home in Broughton to hear the historic Rugby World Cup announcement at stadium:mk and greeted her driver on the driveway.

As the chauffeur helped the Mayor put on her chain an opportunistic thief got into the car, reversed it off the driveway and drove away at speed.

Ms Morris said: “After we put the chain on we walked up the drive and I said, ‘where’s the car?’ We thought we’d gone mad. Then some builders who were working nearby approached us and said they had seen someone reversing at speed who had gone up on the grass verge nearly hitting them.

The mayoral car is supplied to Milton Keynes Council by Raffles Taxis.

Mrs Morris added: “I couldn’t believe it but within minutes Raffles had sent a new car to collect me. The police were also amazing.”
