Milton Keynes man given 19 year prison sentence for attempted murder of friend

Peter Hughes, aged 59, of North Tenth Street, Milton Keynes, was sentenced on Tuesday, October 2, at Aylesbury Crown Court.

Hughes stabbed his friend, a 71-year-old man, 17 times to the chest, leg, arm hand and back in Broadlands at about 8.20pm on Wednesday 25 April this year.

The victim sustained a punctured lung and was treated at Milton Keynes General Hospital and later the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

At a previous hearing Hughes pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Mandy Banfield of Force CID based at Milton Keynes police station, said: “This was a cowardly and unprovoked attack on a 71-year-old man, who Peter Hughes was friends with and had known for more than two decades.

“Hughes has never revealed why he attacked the victim on Wednesday 25 April this year. He has also never asked after the victim’s welfare or shown any remorse.

“Had the victim not had his phone close to hand which enabled him to call the emergency services following the attack it is likely he would have died.

“Thames Valley Police officers attended the scene and gave lifesaving first aid to the victim, who was then taken to Milton Keynes General Hospital and later the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he underwent surgery.

“The victim is now out of hospital and despite some slight complications his injures are healing well.

“I would like to thank the victim for his bravery during this horrendous period in his life, I hope he feels some sense of justice that Hughes has now been convicted and sentenced.

“Finally, I would like to thank all police officers and partners who helped the victim and worked on this investigation.”
