Roads policing officers in conducted checks on heavy goods vehicles at junction 14 of the M1 on Friday, focusing on the weight of the vehicles.

In six hours, 20 vehicles were stopped and 15 offences were found. 10 vehicles were found to be overweight. Fixed Penalty Notices were issued with fines ranging from £60 to £200.

Other offences found included no insurance, no MOT, no road tax and driving while using a mobile phone. Drivers received Fixed Penalty Notices ranging from £60 to £200.

PC Russell Irwin, from Milton Keynes Roads Policing base, said: “I would like to highlight the huge risks drivers take when using vehicles that do not conform to the designated vehicle weights. Not only does driving an overweight vehicle affect the handling and braking capability of a vehicle it significantly increases the risk of the driver being involved in any type of traffic collision and also puts other road users at risk.

“Drivers are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure the vehicle they are using is road worthy before commencing any journey”.
