Controlling Toby Evans, 24, subjected his partner to a series of degrading attacks at their Milton Keynes home. He threatened her with knives, strangled her and spat in her face, a court heard.

The young woman had been so badly bruised by the relentless attacks meted out by the thug, that she had to lie to her colleagues at the hospital when she went in for checks with the midwife.

In a bid to cover his tracks, Evans, who live on Westcroft, demanded that his girlfriend choose between her parents and him.

Describing a particular incident, prosecutor Francis Gaskin said: "In May last year, possibly because the victim refused to delete her social media history, he kicked her to the back. She told him to stop because he might hurt their baby, he said she did not deserve a baby.

"That bruising was still present when the victim gave birth to her daughter and she felt the need to lie to the midwife about how she had been injured.

"It seemed to be a pattern that the offending occurred when Mr Evans and the victim were alone. In her victim impact statement she made it clear that she suffered depression as a result and felt compelled to drop out of her student nursing degree."

On May 30 last year, Evan, who's worked at a primary school and as a bus driver, launched another sickening attack on the victim. He threatened to kill her using a knife, shouting that she needed to choose between her parents or him.

He had continued his violence after the birth of their child and even assaulted his girlfriend's father and brother, who he whacked with a toilet seat which he used as a weapon.

When he was arrested and released on bail, Evans got involved in a relationship with another woman who he held by the throat and threatened with a knife in front of her four-year-old son.

A judge this week told Evans that his late father would "hang his head in shame" if he could see what his son had become.

Tom Phillips, defending Evans, said: "He has shown a desire to find employment. Since the age of 16 he has been working as an apprentice IT technician at a primary school, as a pizza delivery driver and most recently as a bus driver.

"He feels horrible about himself when he thinks about these offences and the distress, pain and suffering he has caused."

The lawyer added that Evans had a long history of mental health problems, which worsened when his father died of a heart attack when Evans was just 14 years old.

Evans, who had one previous conviction for using threatening words or behaviour in 2015, admitted two counts of actual bodily harm, one count of making threats to kill, four counts of assault by beating and two counts of causing criminal damage.

Judge Thomas Rochford, sentencing at Aylesbury Crown Court over Skype for Business, said: "It is clear that you have a troubled background, you lost your father at a critical age for you. I suspect and I am sure you know that he would hang his head in shame if he saw his son appearing in this condition."

The judge sentenced Evans him to four years and four months in prison and told him he will be subject to a restraining order preventing him from approaching or contacting his first victim and her family for the rest of his life.
