MILTON Keynes College has become the first education centre in the city to offer a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma course in Music Technology, writes Liam Andrews.

The course, which begins for the first time in September 2013, could see some of Milton Keynes’ young people go on to become the next Calvin Harris or David Guetta.

Aimed at students who enjoy making music and being part of the production of music, the course will bring fill a gap in MK’s education curriculum.

Course leader David Easter said: “We have had lots of interest already at the last open day actually, it’s really exciting, so fingers crossed it will be a popular course.

“It’s basically everything to do with producing music, so we’ll be looking at doing a lot of work in the studio, looking at how the equipment works and how to mix and produce.

“Hopefully, we will be having our own onsite studio which will be fantastic for us.

“We will be using lots of Mac-based software too, so it will be very hands-on and technical.

“The music technology course is more suited for people who love music, love to make it and want to be part of it, but they might not necessarily want to be the person who is singing on stage or playing it physically.”

By having a wide range of units students will learn a variety of skills which will give them the opportunity to go off in lots of different directions after completing the course.

One unit of the course involves DJ techniques and will be taught by Jon Boyle, who is a DJ at The Living Room in The Hub.

He said: “It’s great being able to teach one of your hobbies and I really can’t wait until we get going.

“It’s about time Milton Keynes had a course like this for young people who want to get involved with music production and DJing – it gives them a fantastic opportunity right on their doorstep.”
