The 36-year-old has been in charge at Tynecastle for two years, and has won 61 of his 105 games in charge.

A club statement read: "Milton Keynes Dons Football Club can confirm it has made an official approach for Heart of Midlothian’s head coach Robbie Neilson with regards to its vacant managerial position.

"The Club respects that Hearts has an important fixture with Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday evening and, therefore, no further comment will be made until after that match."

Neilson guided Hearts to the Scottish Championship in 2015 in convincing fashion with seven games to go, seeing them bounce immediately back to the Scottish Premiership after just a year away.

And they made a great start to life back in the top flight, coming third behind runaway leaders Celtic and runners-up Aberdeen as the best of the rest.

Hearts are currently fourth in the table after 14 games, just three points behind second placed Rangers, but along way behind champions Celtic.
