Ear specialist quits job at Milton Keynes hospital after dispute over her earrings

An ear specialist at Milton Keynes hospital has quit her job after a row about her earrings.

Luna Ibrahim claims she was victimised because she has several studs in each ear.

She said: “The hospital said they did not conform to their uniform policy, but what’s unprofessional about my earrings? I’m looking at other people’s ears, they’re not looking at mine.”

The 40-year-old audiologist started working at MK hospital in mid February but offically quit this month.

She said: “On my first day I was told by my boss that I had to take out all of my earrings.”

Luna refused and challenged the ruling with hospital bosses.

“I noticed other people in the department were wearing hoop earrings and I wanted an explanation about why my piercings were unacceptable.”

But Luna is convinced her stand caused her to be “victimised” by her boss about other trivial matters.

“I don’t think she liked that I said no to her, I felt so uncomfortable I couldn’t cope.”

Luna, who has a teenage daughter, handed in her notice just 11 weeks after starting at the hospital and was then signed off with depression.

She has now found another audiologist job in Eastbourne.

“I think uniforms should only be based on safety, it’s so ironic that as an audiologist I quit my job over my earrings.”

A hospital spokesperson said: “Staff may wear one pair of plain studs for pierced ears. The wearing of long or looped earrings is not permitted.

“We are not able to share information about individual employees or their actions in this matter.”
