Empowering event inspires all ahead of International Women's Day

On Saturday, leading figures in MK gathered to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women across the world.

Organised by MK Equality Council with the help of Conservative Councillor Geetha Morla, the three-hour event in Great Holm was hailed a huge success.

The speakers were Pam Gosal MK Council’s head of economic development, Julie Mills Principal of MK College, Navrita Atwal chief executive for MK Equality Council, Jan Flawn CBE founder of PJ Care, Conservative group leader Edith Bald, Doctor Ayesha Azhar, journalist Ragasudha Vinjamuri, Mrs Manjari Joshi from Elephant connect and Dr Vidhya Gokhale Dr of Pharmacology.

They spoke of gender inequality in their industries, as well as covering issues such as the gender pay gap.

At the end of the evening, organisers announced the Citizen’s Amanda Devlin as winner of the New Age Leadership award.

The award from MK Equality Council aims to recognise women working with all sections of the diverse community and striving towards bringing about positive change in society.

Councillor Morla said: “International Women’s Day was celebrated in Milton Keynes with great pomp and flavour.

“It was very well attended and appreciated by all.

“The panellists inspired all women who attended, with their journeys to reach commendable positions in their respective fields.

“We pledge that this will not be limited to an annual formal ritual, but will actively pursue empowerment of women also we will work against various issues faced by women including domestic violence.”
