Council offers free litter pick kits for people to help clean up Milton Keynes
The gesture is in support of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean campaign
MK Council is urging local people to become litter heroes and spruce up the city.
The council is offering to loan free litter picking kits to anyone who wants to join in the clean up.
The initiative comes as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean campaign, which asks for more people to become #LitterHeroes.
During the past year, people have relied on local parks and green spaces for walks, somewhere to exercise and to play.
But this has resulted not only in an increase in litter - but also an rise in the number of residents who have started litter-picking during the lockdowns.
The number of #LitterHeroes has grown by a third in less than 12 months, says Keep Britain Tidy charity.
Their Great British Spring Clean campaign runs from 28 May 28 to June 13 and calls on the public to help the charity achieve a million miles of litter-picking.
Any individuals or groups wanting to help in Mt can collect litter pick kits free of charge from council collection points. A list of these is on MK Council website here .
"Organising a litter pick is an excellent way of bringing people of all ages together to help to care for the local environment," said a council spokesman.
You can also visit the Keep Britain Tidy website for more details and to check if your local area is already taking part in a clean-up.
The Great British Spring Clean, now in its sixth year, brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.
In 2019, more than half a million #LitterHeroes collected just under a million bags of litter, weighing around 4,308 tons.
