Gritters already out on Milton Keynes estates to prepare for tonight's big freeze

MK Council has sent crews out this afternoon to grit roads on estates all over Milton Keynes.

Once the estate roads are covered, from around 4.30pm, the gritters will move on to the grid road network.

A council spokesman said: "We are expecting freezing temperatures from this evening with rain, some snow and sleet forecast for MK."

The gritting crew will be on standby from midnight to do extra grit runs if needed.

Meanwhile the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) has been activated due to the temperature falling below zero.

This means anybody sleeping rough will be guaranteed accommodation/

The council spokesman said: "If you or someone you know is sleeping rough, please go to the civic offices before 5pm and we can help with somewhere to stay."
