The old-style lights are being replaced with new LEDs.

A Milton Keynes Council spokesman said: " We have over 58,000 street lights across MK to maintain. With energy costs rising each year we are upgrading to LED to manage these increasing costs."

He added: "LEDs provide crisper light using less energy than the older orange sodium lights and we can dim them to save energy. They are targeted to light up only the areas needed, i.e. the pavements and roads -unlike the older 'fishbowl' lights that give off light pollution in all directions."
