Every Can Counts at thecentre:mk

Thecentre:mk has teamed up with national drinks can recycling programme, Every Can Counts, in a bid to increase its sustainability efforts and encourage more people to recycle while ‘on-the-go’.

The partnership has seen thecentre:mk roll out branded recycling points and promotional materials, complementing existing recycling facilities to encourage staff at each of the 189 retail stores in the centre, as well as shoppers, to dispose of their empty cans responsibly.

The programme launched as part of thecentre:mk’s Green Week event, which highlighted its continued commitment to sustainability. The event included competitions to win centre:mk shopping vouchers throughout the week and also involved activities with schools as part of its efforts to engage with shoppers and to encourage them to think about recycling whilst visiting the centre:mk.

Jason Buckley, environmental services manager for thecentre:mk, said: “Working with programmes such as Every Can Counts is an ideal opportunity for us to engage with the staff at thecentre:mk and our customers to demonstrate our dedication to sustainability.

“We actively encourage recycling in the centre and are keen to spread this message far and wide, to both staff and visitors on site. As part of what we have been doing we have already visited a local primary school to try and inspire the children to get involved. We are also looking to talk to other schools in the area and promote the benefits associated with recycling, particularly when they shop with us. By educating and incentivising both customers and staff, we hope to make ‘on-the-go’ recycling a habit.”

Rick Hindley of Every Can Counts, said: “Through the partnership with UK shopping centres like thecentre:mk, we aim to engage with two significant groups of consumers – those who work in the -centre and the shoppers. Partnerships like this offer us a perfect opportunity to promote the fact that ‘Every Can Counts’ to a wide audience.

“It is great to have new shopping centres coming on board with the programme and we are keen to use our experience in thecentre:mk to develop further projects with other retail sites in the future.”
