Family in shock as grandmother dies ‘without dignity’

A grandmother who “died without dignity” in her hospital bed has left her relatives desperate for answers.

The family of 84-year-old June Game claim that her cries for help were ignored as she lay in her own excrement, unable to feed or water herself.

Son-in-law Brian Rumbold, from Bryerley Springs Farm in Great Brickhill said: “She had a horrendous death.

“You wouldn’t treat a dog like that. She was left to die.

“We knew she was dying, but she could have died with dignity, not like that.”

Mrs Game had been staying with her granddaughter Louise Phillipson at the family home last week while Mr Rumbold and his wife Beverley were on holiday.

But when she took a turn for the worse on Tuesday, Mrs Phillipson took her to Milton Keynes Hospital.

Three days later she was dead.

“I’m in shock,” said Louise. “She wasn’t being fed or given water by the nurses. When I asked why she wasn’t on a drip she said it was because she would never learn to want to eat or drink again – naively I believed that.

“I wish I could have done more, but unfortunately I trusted them and I was in denial that she was dying.”

Brian added: “The guilt my daughter feels is overwhelming. She thought she was putting her grandmother in the hands of professionals.

“We were completely shunned by the staff right to the end - they just wouldn’t talk to us. We have a duty to inform everybody because we need to change what is happening at MK Hospital. This has got to stop.

“I do not want what happened to us to happen to happen to anyone else.”

The coroner will be presented with the case today to decide whether there will be an inquest.

Lisa Knight, chief nurse at MK Hospital, extended her condolences to Mrs Game’s family.

She added: “We have just received a formal complaint from the family and have started a robust investigation into every aspect of Mrs Game’s care and treatment. We will keep the family closely informed.”
