Next week counillors will vote on ways to save £22million from this year’s council budget, which includes a proposal to scrap pink sacks in favour of reusable hessians.

Ahead of the debate, Lib Dem group leader Douglas McCall has accused the Labour-led council of using the budget process to make major changes to MK’s recycling scheme.

Mr McCall said: “The last time Labour ran the council recycling rates fell by a third, but when the Lib Dems ran the council recycling rates increased five-fold.

“My group does not believe that the proposals to split garden and kitchen waste collections and charge £40 per year to collect garden waste stack up.

“We will be fighting to keep Milton Keynes as a leading recycling city.”
