Former mayor of Milton Keynes Subhan Shafiq has died of coronavirus

A former Liberal Democrat councillor and mayor has died of Covid-19 during a visit to Pakistan.

Subhan Shafiq died in hospital in Pakistan, say his friends.

Mr Shafiq, who is in his forties and has a young family, is an active member of the mosque in his home town of Wolverton.

He was made mayor of MK in 2014 but resigned three months later after a taxi driver he personally vouched for was found to have been convicted of rape. A couple of months later he resigned as a councillor.

His friend told the Citizen today: "Our great friend, ex Mayor of Milton Keynes Cllr Subhan Shafiq Malik, sadly passed away in Islamabad Hospital in Pakistan."

Pakistan currently has 140,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and and has seen 2,700 deaths, but experts predict cases will soar to more than a million by the end of July as the pandemic takes hold.

Hospitals in Pakistan report they are full and are turning patients away.
