Former St John Ambulance cadet Joy is a hero three times over

A former St John Ambulance cadet has been hailed a shining example to the charity after helping to save three accident victims on three different occasions over the past year.

Joy Irene’s latest Good Samaritan feat was on Sunday, when she was driving past Greenleys, seconds after a 15-year-old boy had been run over by a car.

“I parked up and ran over to help,” said Joy, who is 23.

“A small crowd of people were gathering, so I set them onto directing the traffic to keep the road safe while I helped the boy,” she said.

Joy laid down on the floor with the lad, who was in severe pain and struggling to get up.

“I knew it could cause serous problems if he was allowed to move so I just kept him calm and talked to him until the ambulance arrived,” she said.

The boy was airlifted to John Radcliffe hospital with serious injuries.

The incident happened just weeks after Joy helped another accident victim – this time while she was on holiday in Cyprus.

“A British holidaymaker had a nasty fall. I could tell she’d broken her legs badly and injured her arm,” said Joy, who lives in Bletchley and is a carer.

She guarded the road to protect the woman from being hit by a car, then borrowed a first aid kit from a passing taxi driver to bandage her legs and keep them still.

“I knew the ambulance service was not good out there so I flagged down a police car and got them to take her to hospital.”

A year previously, Joy leapt into action when she spotted a three car crash while driving near Buckingham.

She climbed into the wreckage of a car where the driver was trapped and badly injured.

“He was bleeding badly, so I applied pressure to stem the bleeding until the ambulance arrived. I had no tourniquet, so I did it with my hands,” she said.

Joy was a member of Bletchley St John’s cadets throughout her teenage years and was the third generation of her family to join.

“She is a shining example to St John Ambulance,” said her former mentor Eric Frost.
