Former teacher Betty celebrates her 103rd birthday

A former schoolteacher has proved learning is good for the mind and body '“ by celebrating her 103rd birthday.

Betty Freeman spent 38 years teaching children and she’s still capable of correcting people when they make a grammatical slip, said her son Nick.

For the past nine years Betty has lived at Lathbury Manor residential care home, where staff pride themselves on her longevity.

She celebrated her birthday on Sunday with a small tea party with relatives.

Betty has two sons, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

“She comes from a long line of women who lived until they were a very advanced age,” said Nick.

“Her mother and her grandmother both lived until they were 90, which was unusual for their generations.”

After Betty retired from teaching, her interests were bridge, music and literature.
