Ronnie Slade, 62, from Woburn, had been visiting a friend when he came down with flu, which developed into bilateral pneumonia.

After being admitted to a Moldovan hospital on January 12, Ronnie also suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome and renal failure - leaving him on a life support machine in a near terminal state.

His family set up a fund to privately airlift the 62-year-old back home, but after his condition improved slightly they were able to fly him back commercially with a medical escort.

Ronnie’s daughter Carlie, from Milton Keynes, said: “He has made a miraculous recovery, which we put down to not only his incredible fighting spirit and the relentless efforts of the hospital but also to the massive amounts of support, prayer and positive thoughts.”
