The funeral of police officer DC Joe Mabuto is held in Milton Keynes

The 42-year-old tragically collapsed and died at work on September 27. His funeral was held at the Church of Christ the Cornerstone.

Joe joined Thames Valley Police in 2004, where he was stationed at Milton Keynes Police Station on the Patrol Team 5, and immediately made an impact on his team and within the community that he worked, by simply being present, his considered and thoughtful approach instantly calming volatile situations, and providing an ear and a hand to those that needed his support. A team member vividly remembers Joe being thanked by numerous people that he arrested, for the professional and personable manner in which they had been treated by him.

He moved to the North Sector Neighbourhood Policing Team in 2007, initially as a Neighbourhood Officer and in 2008 became a Supervisor, for a team of PCSO’s. Together they worked with the community and partner agencies to improve the quality of living in the local area, by understanding their needs, supporting problem solving approaches to repeated crime themes and safeguarding those with the greatest need.

“He was a strong believer in being visible in the Neighbourhood he served, and much preferred to be on foot patrol, so that he could speak to people within his community. During a time of tension within the estate Joe’s knowledge and understanding of the situation was key in resolving and returning peace to the area, his outstanding work was commended by the Area Commander, and I know that Joe was extremely proud of this work and his recognition,” said PS Rena Galardziak.

He passed his National Investigators Exam in March 2015 and applied at the next possible opportunity for a Detective’s post. During August of the same year Joe passed his selection interview with flying colours, scoring an overall ‘A’ grade with his comprehensive and considered approach.

He was posted to the Force CID team at Milton Keynes in October of that year, where he trained and learnt the craft of investigating serious and complex crime. Joe took great pride in all of his investigations, paying attention to every detail and most importantly, ensuring that his victims were given the very best service.

“Joe was so determined to learn and it was always a pleasure to answer any question he had and give him pointers. He quickly became a driven investigator, striving to get results. He loved what he did and was proud to be doing his job,” said DC Greg Hughes.

Thames Valley Police said: ‘Joe impressed everyone that came into contact with him. His beaming smile, positive attitude and caring nature, are traits that will live on and be remembered forever across the Milton Keynes Police Family.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, mother and siblings, as we share the loss of this iconic and gentle man.’
