The former Three Counties radio host had the nation’s sympathy when he appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain wearing a neck brace.

He recounted his tale of ‘near death experience’, telling how he threw a coin into a wishing well in MK so he could make a wish. He said the coin became stuck in the grid and when he tried to dislodge it, he fell down the well.

Iain, 44, decsribed his ordeal in a series of tweets from inside the well as he waitied to be rescued.

“Phone dying. sprained ankle. Soaking well. I’ve been told the fire brigade are on their way. Pray god for me.” he tweeted at 7.02pm.

Twenty minutes later he tweeted that police were blue-lighting him to his talkRadio show, praising tyhem for their “incredible” service.

But this week a Citizen investigation cast doubt over the entire incident.

Firstly local Good Morning Britain viewers questioned where the mysterious wishing well was located in MK.

Then Bucks Fire and Rescue confirmed they had not attended any such incident on that day. Neighbouring fire authorites said the same.

The final clue came from Mr Lee’s agent Nick Canham who stated the rescuers were “the McGrew brothers”.

It is believed he was referred to the fictitious Pugh, Pugh and Barney McGrew from the Trumpton TV series for children.

Mr Lee’s posts now appear to have been deleted from Twitter.

The Citizen explained our doubts about the story to his agent Mr Canham, who works at the presitigeous Vivienne Clore agency in London.

He said: “I am afraid I’m not able to give any more details about the incident. Iain is filming today and is unavailable for comment.”

The day after his TV appearance Mr Lee was spotted out shopping minus his neck brace. He said he’d shed the brace because his neck was improving.

Mr Lee left Three Counties Radio suddenly in 2015 after clashing on-air with a Christian lawyer, calling her a bigot during a heated debate about homophobia.
