A female fitness ambassador who was born male has told how she despised sport before she changed sex.
Today 59-year-old Delia Johnston is an avid netball and badminton player as well as a self-confessed gym addict.
Yet before her transition and subsequent gender reassignment surgery she refused to even watch sport on TV.
“I hated it with a vengeance,” she said.
Delia’s passion was sparked after she worked as an ambassador at the 2012 Olympics.
But keeping fit became a matter of life and death just over a year ago, when she had an emergency double heart by-pass operation.
Five months afterwards she became hooked on netball, using her 6ft height to huge advantage.
She now runs her own business, Trans in Sport, to encourage other transgender or transsexual people to take the fitness plunge.
“Sport allows people to be who they want to be. I’m not a perfect role model but I’m out there, I love it, and just wish I’d done it years ago!”
