Hundreds of people have been enjoying the ‘coolest’ new leisure venue in Milton Keynes.

The city’s new ice rink, in the redundant Waitrose store in the Food Centre, opened to the public for the first time on Monday, replacing the Planet Ice rink at the Leisure Plaza which is currently closed for refurbishment, as part of a deal for supermarket giant Morrisons to build a new store.

The new rink is operated by MKIce, a non-profit organisation made up of volunteers from the city’s numerous ice-using groups. It was set up to provide a temporary facility for ice-using groups and teams, with the new-look Planet Ice not expected to open until late next year.

“We had a busy opening session with lots of regular faces and some new,” said MKIce director David Carmichael. “We hope that Monday nights will once again be a popular skating night.

“This Saturday and Sunday we will have free skating lessons for all at 9.30am. This is a taster session for the Learn to Skate programme that commences on November 30. Spaces are limited and will be given on a first come first served basis.”
