Ikea lights up the eco issues

ECO lessons at Oakgrove School have been brought to life thanks to Ikea.

The Scandinavian store sent their environmental specialist Vicky Oliver to visit Year 7 pupils and share the company ethos on environmental care.

Youngsters discovered how the Milton Keynes store has eco-efficient technologies, such as rain water harvesting for flushing toilets, and learnt about where and how wood is sourced for furniture products.

All the students entered a quiz to win a ‘sunnan’ lamp – an ingenious solar powered desk lamp – and create a list of sustainable actions for the future.

Lucky Emily Brewer won the first prize.

As part of Ikea’s global development outreach, for every sunnan light sold in store, another one is sent to India, which is one of the company’s recognised charitable destinations.

Deputy headmaster Melissa Gardner, said: “Thanks to Ikea, the Eco Warrior group at Oakgrove will visit the store and help to promote local sustainability in a variety of forthcoming projects.”
