A WOMAN was told she would be punched if she didn’t hand over her shopping bag.

The incident took place at 6.54pm on Wednesday (January 9) as the 53-year-old victim was walking along Avebury Boulevard towards Sainsbury’s.

When she crossed South Fifth Street she felt someone tug at her shopping bag.

As she turned around, the male offender told her to hand the bag over or he would punch her.

He managed to get the bag and ran along the alleyway between South Fifth and South Sixth Street in the direction of the South Row open air car park.

The victim did not suffer any injuries.

The shopping bag contained various items, including two iPods and a camera.

The offender is black, 5ft 8ins, slim, clean shaven with short black cropped hair, and in his early to mid twenties. He was wearing a dark jacket and trousers.

Detective Constable Wendy Cissell is asking for witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious or who saw the offender in the area at the time to come forward.

Anyone with information should contact DC Cissell via the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 101.
