It’s double trouble for discount store

A battle of the budget supermarkets could result from plans to develop the historic Railway Works site in Wolverton.

A regeneration company this week submitted proposals to fill the 37 acre site with housing, landscaped areas – and a discount foodstore.

But the news came just days after residents organised a campaign to back plans for an Aldi supermarket to be built a few hundred yards up the road at a former car showroom.

Now Aldi must decide whether to go ahead with the original plan or switch to the new development.

Already Wolverton and Greenleys Town Council has decided to back the former.

“We decided to go with what the people want, and the people of Wolverton clearly think the showroom is a better site,” said a spokesman.

Residents say the showroom site is currently an eyesore and a supermarket there would serve the Stony Stratford end of town.

Meanwhile one resident said: “After all this time waiting for a site for one cheap food store now suddenly we have two. It’s like buses –they all coming at once.”
