Letter of the week: EU is wonderful, let's not step off the arc
Just think about it for a while. An increasing number of countries are pooling sovereignty and actually collaborating.
That is, they are giving up a certain amount of power to work together in the common good.

Hide AdClimate change, crime, immigration, trade, international relations. All the big issues of the day dealt with under the umbrella of the EU.
What a shame, what a sign it would be to the rest of the world to give up on all that.
It would stick two fingers up to the rest of the world that we don’t want to collaborate. We’re only interested in what we can get out of it in terms of trade.
As if this country was still in charge of an empire that brought death and mayhem on the planet.

Hide AdThe EU came out of a desire to escape the European sickness of long periods of bloodshed when we were fighting and killing each other in wars, from Agincourt to Arnhem.
The EU has its problems, who could deny that, but it remains a diplomatic and human triumph. It’s on the arc of history. Let’s not step off the arc.
