Their group leader Edith Bald said it was “hugely disrespectful” to carry on with the motion that urged councillors to stay in the EU - just one day after the terror attacks in Brussels.

Labour and Lib Dem councillors voted to go ahead with the debate after Tory Councillor Andrew Geary threatened to leave the chamber if it went ahead.

Before leaving the room in protest, Mrs Bald said: “It is not right or appropriate to debate this in light of the atrocities which took place in Brussels yesterday. “We will not be joining in on the debate.”

Lib Dem group leader said he was “disappointed” that the Conservatives chose to leave the meeting.

Labour’s Kevin Wilson said he “could be wrong” but assumes the Tories leaving the chamber was an “excuse” to avoid showing the party’s division over the EU.
