Former Transport Secretary and Shadow Minister Lord Adonis, was in Milton Keynes today as part of his study into city growth.

Lord Adonis met business and skills leaders to hear more about economic prospects in the city and to learn more about barriers to growth.

He addressed a business roundtable hosted by Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce, meeting business leaders and representatives from universities, colleges, banks and South East Midlands Enterprise Partnership.

The event, hosted by the Chamber at its offices in Avebury Boulevard, focused on challenges constraining economic growth.

Findings will be fed into an independent growth review led by Lord Adonis ahead of the 2015 General Election.

Lord Adonis also met skills leaders at UCMK hearing from the Open University, Milton Keynes College and SEMLEP about future skills needs for the city.

Lord Adonis was accompanied by Andrew Pakes and Emily Darlington, Labour’s parliamentary candidates for MK.

Mr Pakes, parliamentary candidate for Milton Keynes Southsaid:“It was great to welcome Lord Adonis to Milton Keynes to meet business leaders and to hear about the innovation already happening in the city.

“We need to be ambitious for growth and that means bringing politicians, business leaders and educationalists together to promote jobs and investment in the city.

“This was an important opportunity to showcase our city achievements and to discuss the kind of government support that we need in the future.”

Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted that Lord Adonis was able to engage with business leaders from Milton Keynes as part of his review to help drive growth forward. This was a fantastic opportunity for businesses to personally express their concerns and the challenges they faced at grassroots level.

“The roundtable was also a chance for them to potentially shape future policy to enable Milton Keynes to become a national beacon of excellence for innovation and enterprise.”

The Adonis Growth Review, which is supported by two leading think tanks, Policy Network and IPPR, will make policy recommendations in spring 2014 for a modern growth and industrial strategy to promote more and better jobs.

This roundtable is part of a series of visits Lord Adonis is making around the country to help take into account the diverse challenges to innovation and growth.
