A 38-year-old man has been jailed for two and a half years after being found guilty of three counts of sexual assault on the same 17-year-old girl – on a bus.

Shanmugam Satiyarajah, of Vauxhall, Bradville, was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment at Aylesbury Crown Court last Friday. He has also been handed a sexual offences prevention order, preventing him from riding local buses in Milton Keynes.

On three occasions between May 19 and June 3 this year, Satiyarajah sat next to the same 17-year-old girl on a public bus. He then moved closer to her and touched her inappropriately.

He was charged with three counts of sexual assault on June 8 and pleaded guilty in court.

Investigator John Baston said: “We feel this is an appropriate sentence which reflects the alarm and distress felt by this young lady, who was initially too embarrassed to report the incidents to police. I want to commend her courage and thank her for coming forward.

“Once reported, this offender was identified and charged within four days. I also want to thank Arriva Bus Company for their assistance. CCTV on buses is a valuable aid to investigations.”
