WHEN he was made redundant from his role in Financial Services earlier this year, Milton Keynes Poet Laureate Mark Niel decided to turn his passion into a full-time affair, writes Sammy Jones.
A couple of months on and his word-ly way is already paying dividends.
Next stop: Radio 2.
Mark has been asked to be the station’s Bard for 2Day.
Every Radio 2 presenter will go live during 2Day, and a host of special guests have been lined-up to make the celebratory event go with a bang.
Mark, 48, will be at the station all day, soaking up the events before penning a poem that will be broadcast on the Claudia Winkleman show.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity to see and be part of national radio,” he told the Citizen. “The schedule for the day is amazing and I hope I can do justice to it by writing a poem in such a short time.”
But Mark is being modest – he has already been commissioned to write a poem for the Diamond Jubilee weekend, which has been recorded by Imelda Staunton and will be broadcast on Radio 2 as part of the Holiday Weekend celebrations.
“It was a privilege but also a challenge to try and strike the appropriate tone to celebrate such a fantastic royal milestone,” Mark added.
“Fortunately, the producers seemed happy with the poem and I look forward to hearing the recorded version on June 3.”
There is no rest for the poetically perfect though, and Mark is looking forward to a summer of writing wonderfully and waxing lyrical, and has recently confirmed a spot at the prestigious Latitude Festival.
